Winter Storm Fern's Impact on Georgia's Power Grid: A Comprehensive Update
Habersham County, Georgia, is facing a challenging situation as Winter Storm Fern continues to wreak havoc on the region's power supply. As of 8 p.m., nearly half of Habersham EMC's customers remain without electricity, a significant improvement from earlier in the day. Despite this progress, the total number of power outages persists at over 18,000, with 5,000 customers still in the dark since 6 p.m. This number is expected to stabilize or decrease as the evening progresses, but reports of additional outages persist.
The White County area has been the hardest hit, with 50% of HEMC's customers affected. The situation is further complicated by the arrival of strong winds and cold air overnight, which will pose challenges for those without power.
Georgia Power reports a substantial reduction in outages, with only 21,000 customers affected statewide, down from a peak of 64,000. However, other local power companies are still grappling with the storm's impact. Hart EMC, serving Hart, Banks, Franklin, Elbert, Madison, and Stephens counties, has 203 customers without power, while Blue Ridge EMC reports over 100 outages in Northern Lumpkin County.
The power outages intensified around 2 p.m. due to a line of strong showers, gusty winds, and additional freezing rain and sleet. Road conditions remain treacherous and are expected to worsen overnight, adding to the challenges faced by residents and emergency services.
This update highlights the ongoing struggles of Georgia's power grid in the face of Winter Storm Fern. As the storm continues to impact the region, residents are urged to stay informed and prepared for potential power outages and hazardous road conditions.
